Research and Consulting

Utilizing the know-how cultivated through marine ecology research and the connections with many researchers formed after the earthquake disaster, we will accumulate knowledge on the sustainable use of natural capital in Minamisanriku Town, where forests, villages, and the sea are compactly integrated. We will explore the conditions and measures necessary for the local community to continue to develop into the future while enjoying the richness of nature, without interrupting the economic cycle.

Marine Survey

Ocean Acidification Monitoring
To understand the current state of ocean acidification in coastal areas, we cooperate with the Satoumi Zukuri Kenkyu Kaigi (the nonprofitresearch council on building satoumi), to conduct monthly ocean observations and water samples. We have also installed stationary measuring devices to constantly monitor water temperature, salinity, and pH.
If ocean acidification continues unabated, it is predicted that it will cause devastating damage to the aquaculture industry in the bay, making it urgent to understand the current situation and develop countermeasures.
Biota Survey
Commissioned by the Minamisanriku Nature Center, we support aquatic biota surveys and conduct surveys to understand the current state and changes in the town’s ecosystem, which is the foundation of human activity.
eDNA Survey
In collaboration with Tohoku University and Minamisanriku Nature Center, we are conducting a fish fauna survey using eDNA (environmental DNA). eDNA technology is used to detect traces of living organisms, and while specialized equipment is required for analysis, the survey itself is easy for anyone to carry out. For this reason, we are planning a research experience event for the general public and promoting activities to deepen interest in the ecosystem of Shizugawa Bay.
